Belgrade is the capital of the southeast European country of Serbia. Its most significant landmark is the Beogradska Tvrdava, an imposing fortress at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. Constanta was an ancient metropolis and seaport, founded by the Greeks in 600 BC. It has a place in legend too, as Jason is said to have landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. It is a repository of archaeological treasures, most importantly a vast complex on three levels that once linked the upper town to the harbor. Two-thirds of it remains, including a large display of multicolored mosaics. The old town is full of atmosphere and worth a wander. Fine mansions and hotels were built in the 19th century, when the king decided to revive Constanta as a port and seaside resort, and a casino is a more recent addition.
