Possibilities for an MSC excursion include a trip out to Elephanta, a rock-cut cave on an island in Mumbai harbour containing a wealth of ancient art. Another great excursion is the Gateway of India. Commemorating the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, India’s own honey-coloured Arc de Triomphe, the Gateway of India, is Colaba’s principal monument and the landmark most iconic of Mumbai in the Indian imagination. The aforementioned Prince of Wales Museum of Western India ranks among the city’s most distinctive Raj-era constructions. It stands rather grandly in its own gardens off MG Road, crowned by a massive white Mughal-style dome, beneath which one of India’s finest collections of paintings and sculpture is arrayed on three floors.

Scenic, tropical, and often called the Pearl of the Orient, Mormugao, India’s largest, natural harbor offers unexpected cultural contrasts in this former Portuguese ruled seaport area. Hire a taxi to transport you to Vasco City, named after founder, Vasco da Gama who fortified the area in 1543. A little outside of the city, Kateel Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple is another beautiful site, nestled within the flow of the Nandin River. There is an unusually high congregation of Catholic worshipers in New Mangalore, and St. Aloysius Chapel is their colourful place of worship. Richly decorated inside, vibrant frescoes from the brush of Antonio Moscheni are lavished across the interior, rivalling some of Italy’s finest. Lazy waves roll ashore at New Mangalore’s tranquil beaches, where you can settle back and relax. Cool off with a dip in the waters, or bob on the surface in a leisurely boat. Enjoy wide panoramas of the sunset bouncing off waves where long-legged, wading birds tread carefully.

Popularly referred to as the ’Queen of the Arabian Sea,’ Cochin (Khochi) has been a trading post since early Roman times, due to its strategic location between Europe and China.
